The San Francisco 49ers made one of the biggest trades of the offseason a few weeks ago, making a deal with the Miami Dolphins for the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. While the 49ers are expected to take a quarterback with the selection, they apparently had some serious interest in former Jets quarterback Sam Darnold.
Appearing on “The Rich Eisen Show” Friday, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said both teams engaged in trade talks before Darnold was eventually sent to the Carolina Panthers.
“I know that they were very serious about Darnold,” Rapoport said about the 49ers’ interest. “At the time, the Jets weren’t willing to deal him and really weren’t willing to consider offers until they did the full evaluation and saw everyone throw in person. The Jets really wanted to go through the process. It sounds to me like, at that point, probably around mid-March, the 49ers were just moving on.”
Eisen then questioned why the 49ers had not asked about the second overall pick if they had already been in discussions for Darnold. Rapoport said he believed that is what Jets general manager Joe Douglas thought after the trade talks broke down. However, Rapoport said that many teams believe that they would never part with the second overall pick.
“Everybody knew the Jets didn’t want to trade number two,” Rapoport said. “I’ve been surprised that they haven’t gotten any offers and almost no calls or conversations for number two, just like I’m sure nobody’s called the Jaguars for one because I have a pretty good sense that they’re not trading that thing.”
