The key to evaluating LSU versus Alabama recruiting battles is timing and location. Those two factors will be critical to the 2022 recruiting class for both football programs. Here’s a quick look at where each school stands with commitments, it’s desire to land top skill players, and how each program stacks up against one another along the recruiting trail as we head into the month of June, the first month the NCAA will allow official visits in over a year.

Total Commitments And National Scope

Alabama: 6 (three offensive and three defensive).

LSU: 13 (eight offensive and five defensive).

LSU is off to the faster start than Alabama, racking up nine in-state commitments and one of the top classes in the country. While Alabama’s commitments are certainly very good, the Crimson Tide is looking to capitalize on more out-of-state targets than LSU.

The poor fools are to the point of constantly comparing their recruiting class to Alabama’s, and looking for any silver lining they can, even this far out from the actual signing days.

An Alabama staffer with a familiar name is moving on to a full-time coaching job.

Tino Sunseri announced he was accepting a job as the quarterbacks coach at James Madison after two seasons in Tuscaloosa. The son of linebackers coach Sal Sunseri and brother of former Tide DB Vinnie Sunseri came to Alabama in 2019 as a graduate assistant.

Congrats to Tino for his promotion to his first on-field coaching position! Hopefully he can train up his QB coaching skills at JMU and then eventually work his way back to Tuscaloosa down the road as a polished guru.

“Very important,” Jackson told BamaOnLine. “I don’t wanna go in there and be behind in the weight room. That’s what I’ve been focusing on.”

Jackson enrolled at East Mississippi Community College last year, but the Lions withdrew from conference play due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Maryland native hasn’t played in a game since 2019 when the cornerback was at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College and finished his freshman season with 25 tackles and three interceptions for the Greyhounds.

Since signing with the Crimson Tide in December, Jackson has worked out Monday-Saturday with Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays spent in the weight room and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays featuring field work. Known as a longer defensive back, Jackson’s training has included ways to still fluidly maneuver around with his 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame.

“I’m working on my transitions out of pretty awkward situations since I’m kind of taller,” he said.

While 4th-year man Jalyn Armour-Davis seems to have the upper hand and freshman phenom Kool-Aid McKinstry has already been making waves in the battle to replace Pat Surtain II at cornerback (Ronald Williams and Brandon Turnage have already transferred out... A good sign that the former two are progressing well), don’t forget about JUCO signee Khyree Jackson. The 6’3” corner is an intimidating presence and big hitter on the outside and could show up this summer and really run with things.

Jones was an insanely valuable player for the Tide last year, despite some of his flaws as a shooter. He’s the kind of guy that should be able to latch on to a team in the NBA and hang around the league for many years. The amount of heart required to play his level of defense is something that just can’t be taught.

Finally, after their nice showing in the Big 12 tournament a couple of days ago, the Alabama women’s crew team was invited to compete for the national championship.

The Alabama women’s rowing team on Tuesday added another first to the 2021 list.

The Crimson Tide were selected for an at-large bid to the NCAA championships set for May 28-30 in Sarasota, Florida. Alabama was the runner-up at last week’s Big 12 Conference meet behind only host Texas.

Each of the three Alabama boats will compete in the 22-team field. The 1V8+ crew has the best seeding at No. 11 followed by 1V4+ at No. 13 and 2V8+ at No. 17.

“When we talk to our team and recruits, we tell them that when they come here, they have a chance to win championships,” coach Glenn Putyrae said. “Anybody racing in this regatta can win the national championship and now we get to take our shot. We’ve raced a grueling schedule. We knew, having never been selected to the championship before, we would have to have a body of work that would be unassailable in the eyes of the selectors.

What can I say? We’re just a championship school.
