COLUMBUS, Ohio — C.J. Stroud may have separated in Ohio State football’s quarterback competition, but on Wednesday he separated almost completely.
Stroud took only a handful of reps, leaving the bulk of first-string action to Kyle McCord and Jack Miller. Ohio State coach Ryan Day later attributed the lack of action to a day of rest for the redshirt freshman and now presumptive starter.
“Something typically we do in camp is just shut them down at times with their arms,” Day said. “So that’s that’s all that was.”
With Big Ten Network cameras in attendance, Ohio State opened its entire practice to reporters on Wednesday. It was the final scheduled viewing period, as the Buckeyes’ 12 remaining practices before the Sept. 2 season opener at Minnesota are expected to be closed.
Wednesday also provided the first look at Quinn Ewers in a Buckeye uniform. The top prospect in the 2021 class, who reclassified and arrived over the weekend after enrolling early, took fewer reps behind McCord and Miller. When not throwing, he stayed close to quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis and quality control coach Keenan Bailey.
“There’s just so much for him to learn in so little a period of time,” Day said. “Usually we have months upon months of time before they even step onto the field.”
Day called this a “big evaluation week” for McCord and Miller. With Stroud now publicly nudged ahead in the quarterback race, Day has not declared any separation between the other two established scholarship competitors.
“By Friday, I think we need to find out who’s game ready,” Day said.
Among other observations from Wednesday:
• Day said he expected no long-term injuries among the veteran players who were not engaged with practice.
Defensive end Zach Harrison began the day working on the side but later joined his position group for a teaching period. Linebackers Cody Simon and Tommy Eichenberg, cornerback Marcus Williamson and defensive tackle Jerron Cage were among the other players working on the side.
Offensive lineman Thayer Munford wore a baseball cap and shorts and was seen instructing the rest of his position group during drills. Munford has been absent from multiple practices lately, though Day said the three-year returning starter “will be practicing here real soon.”
With Munford out, Matthew Jones subbed in at left guard. Otherwise, Ohio Sate continued to roll out its revised offensive line with Nicholas Petit-Frere at left tackle, Harry Miller at center, Paris Johnson Jr. at right guard and Dawand Jones at right tackle.
• With those linebackers and other defenders out, Ohio State mixed in a lot of bodies when sending its No. 1 defense onto the field. Players such as Palaie Gaoteote and Ty Hamilton were among the new players repping there, based on previous viewing periods.
Again, Day expected a clearer picture on the defensive starters by the end of this week.
“I think there is some depth being being built across the board on defense,” Day said, “but you’ve also got to have your guys and you’ve got to have the guys who play. Eventually, someone’s got to get out there and make it happen.”
• Miyan Williams continued to lead the running back drills in order of reps, with Master Teague and TreVeyon Henderson following. Running backs coach Tony Alford said depth chart decisions will come later in camp.
“Whatever it takes to win games,” Alford said of the criteria. “We’re not into making guys happy. This is not a happy camp.”
