Only four NHL players have not been vaccinated against COVID-19, commissioner Gary Bettman announced.
Bettman, speaking shortly before the league's season-opening game in Tampa on Tuesday between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins, also told reporters that all of the league's officials have been vaccinated.
"Everyone banding together to do the right thing — maybe that's why hockey is the ultimate team sport," he said at the news conference.
Last month, the NHL and the NHL Players' Association finalized COVID-19 protocols for the 2021-22 season which include allowing teams to suspend unvaccinated players who are "unable to participate in club activities." The terms for suspension include situations where unvaccinated players cannot travel to or from an area because of local, provincial/state and/or federal regulations.
Exceptions to the policy include someone who is unvaccinated due to medical or religious reasons.
If a fully vaccinated player tests positive for COVID-19, or he is unvaccinated due to medical or religious reasons, his sickness will be treated as "a hockey-related injury" under the collective bargaining agreement.
