Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, was, in fact, one of the greatest days in college football history. Nobody knows what its ultimate impact will be on the season, but what happened in the moment was indisputable: nonstop drama from noon to midnight, with historically significant results, thrilling high-profile games and great endings in every time slot.

No. 1 Alabama lost on a last-second field goal at Texas A&M, the Crimson Tide’s first loss to an unranked opponent in 14 years and the first loss by a No. 1 team to an unranked opponent in 13 years. No. 3 Iowa stormed back to beat No. 4 Penn State in a monumental Big Ten matchup. Oklahoma and Texas delivered arguably the best game in Red River Showdown history. Ole Miss and Arkansas put on another event, and Michigan and Notre Dame joined the Aggies in winning on late field goals. The drama went on and on, making it an all-time classic day.

To rank the best days in the history of college football, The Athletic compiled data in numerous categories for every day of games since the start of the AP poll in 1936, including the number of matchups of ranked/top-10 teams and how close those results were, close wins or upset losses for ranked teams, wins by unranked teams against ranked/top-10 teams and much more.
