Report: Kenny Golladay receives ‘1-year, prove-it’ offer from Bengals, will visit Giants - MLive.com

ALLEN PARK -- The market for Kenny Golladay is slowly starting to form after a quiet start to free agency for wide receivers.

Golladay has reportedly received a “one-year, prove-it” offer from the Cincinnati Bengals and will visit the New York Giants. ESPN reports that no decision has been made concerning Cincy’s proposal while other teams remain interested.

While it remains to be seen what Golladay could fetch from others, “prove-it” territory is quite the fall for someone who reportedly turned down a long-term extension paying more than $18 million per season, according to ESPN. The Detroit Lions then chose not to use their franchise tag on the receiver, further signaling a likely end to the relationship.

Golladay, 28, is arguably the best receiver and player left on the free-agent market. Still, there hasn’t been much significant movement at his position, with the league’s salary cap down more than $15 million and the draft coming loaded with another deep receiver class.

Golladay was arguably the best draft pick of Bob Quinn’s tenure as general manager, for what it’s worth. He made one Pro Bowl appearance while leading the league with 11 touchdown catches in 2019. Golladay developed into one of the better magicians in contested situations, sitting second in the NFL with 53 contested catches since 2018. He has 183 catches for 3,068 yards and 21 scores across 47 career games.

He got better with each passing season, turning in a pile of highlight-worthy catches in the tightest of windows. The 6-foot-4 receiver doesn’t gain much in terms of separation from coverage, but more than makes up for it with his playmaking ability.

He missed most of the 2020 campaign, and then the Lions fired their general manager, head coach and traded longtime starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. Golladay maintained he wanted to stick around throughout the season, but that was before Stafford and several other teammates were on the way out.

“Everybody knows what I’m capable of doing. You know what I’m saying?” Golladay said back in December. “I wasn’t worried about like I need to play (or) I got to show the people. People know who Kenny Golladay is, and I was really trying to make sure my body was right. I don’t want to go out there and put bad stuff on tape.”

Golladay isn’t the only receiver on the way out, with Marvin Jones and Jamal Agnew signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Danny Amendola and Mohamed Sanu remain without deals, leaving Quintez Cephus, Geronimo Allison and Tyrell Williams as the only receivers under contract. New quarterback Jared Goff is looking at a mostly blank slate out wide, with many expecting the team to target one of the top wideouts at Pick 7.
