The Dwayne Haskins experiment in Washington is over. The former Ohio State quarterback was released by the team, according to a statement from head coach Ron Rivera on Monday.

Now, the first-round draft pick and Heisman finalist will be left without a team and will not likely be picked up from waivers the remainder of the season because of the risk/reward finances associated with the last two years of his rookie contract. We’ll have to see what happens in the offseason and beyond.

First, Haskins will have to do some soul searching and growing up. Incidents like his strip club stunt, selfies during the game and more need to be reeled in. More than that though, he has to figure out his talent on the field and show he can be an asset to an organization if he gets another shot.

That wasn’t lost on Haskins. He released a statement after the news of his departure broke and thanked Washington and its fans and looked forward to being better in the future.

“My time with the WFT has unfortunately come to an end, Haskins wrote in a tweet. “I thank the team & fans for the opportunity to play for the team I grew up rooting for. I take full responsibility for not meeting the standards of a NFL QB & will become a better man & player because of this experience.”

We hope he’s right. There’s so much talent in that big ‘ole arm of his. We’re looking forward to the day when he can prove everyone wrong with a second chance.
