CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns just keep taking care of their own business in terms of their playoff destiny. They extended their winning streak to four and notched a signature win with a 41-35 victory in Nashville vs. the Titans.
With the win, the Browns now have a 91 percent chance to make the playoffs according to the New York Times’ playoff simulator. And according to the simulator, any two wins will all but guarantee a playoff spot.
The 9-3 Browns also held on to the No. 5 spot in the AFC, which matters because the rest of the Wild Card contenders took care of their business on Sunday.
We’ll look at the rest of the contenders by going through seed order. First up is No. 6 Miami, which had a little bit of trouble early on against the Bengals. The Dolphins trailed at halftime, 7-6, before Tua Tagovailoa and company got going for a 19-7 win.
The No. 7 Colts had a lot more trouble on their hands when they were in Houston to take on Deshaun Watson and the Texans. Houston had the ball all the way down to the Colts’ 2-yard line in the final two minutes.
Then, this happened.
Watson fumbled the snap, and the Colts recovered to secure a 26-20 win. Both the Colts and Dolphins are 8-4. However, Miami owns the tiebreaker for winning percentage in AFC games, meaning the Dolphins still hold the No. 6 spot.
No game was more dramatic in the wild card race, or in the NFL in general, than the Raiders very nearly giving the Jets their first win of the season. They were stopped on a fourth down deep in Jets territory with 1:42 to go, but got the ball back.
With only five seconds left, Derek Carr found an open Henry Ruggs III in the end zone to give Las Vegas a stunning 31-28 win.
The amazing play not only spared the Raiders the embarrassment of losing to the winless Jets, but it also keeps the pressure on the Colts and Dolphins as the Raiders are now 7-5.
Also, the New England Patriots are still in the mix. The Pats are all but guaranteed a 6-6 record with a 38-0 lead vs. the Chargers early in the fourth quarter.
6-5 Baltimore, the last team in the wild card mix yet to play, ends Week 13 with a home game against Dallas on Tuesday night.
Here is how the AFC stands after the 4 p.m. window of games.
1. Pittsburgh (11-0)
2. Kansas City (10-1)
3. Buffalo (8-3)
4. Tennessee (8-4)
