The Darrell Bevell era is off to a roaring start in Detroit.
In their first game since head coach Matt Patricia was fired, the Detroit Lions rallied for two touchdowns in 41 seconds late in the fourth quarter on Sunday to stun the rival Chicago Bears in a 34-30 upset.
Chicago was in control with a 10-point lead for much of the game before Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford found Marvin Jones for a 25-yard touchdown to cap a 96-yard drive, cutting Chicago’s lead to 30-27 with 2:19 remaining.
Trubisky fumble seals Chicago’s fate
On the ensuing Bears possession, Mitchell Trubisky fumbled inside the Chicago 10-yard line on a strip sack by Romeo Okwara. The Lions recovered.
Two plays later, Adrian Peterson ran for a Lions touchdown to take a 34-30 lead with 1:48 remaining. The Bears turned the ball over on downs on their next possession, and the Lions are off to a 1-0 start under Bevell, Detroit’s interim head coach. The longtime NFL offensive coordinator was making his debut as a head coach.
New era in Detroit
The rally was a marked departure for the Lions, who regularly underwhelmed and underperformed in a 13-29-1 run under Patricia’s leadership. The win marked the first time the Lions rallied from a 10-point deficit for a win since 2014, according to Fox.
Frustration mounts around Matt Nagy
For Chicago, it was another disappointing loss in a frustrating season that’s likely ending without a playoff berth. The Bears dropped into a last-place tie in the NFC North at 5-7 with the Lions after blowing a game they controlled throughout.
It was the sixth straight loss for Chicago following a 5-1 start. And this time, they can’t blame head coach Matt Nagy’s much-ridiculed offense, which put up 30 points. But a 30-point performance won’t turn down the heat on Nagy, who drew the ire of former Bears Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs after the game.
Briggs isn’t the only Bears fan frustrated with team leadership. Nagy may well be on his way to suffering the same fate as Patricia if Chicago doesn’t salvage its season.
For the Lions, Stafford had his most productive game of the season, completing 27 of 42 pass attempts for 402 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Jones was his top target with eight catches for 116 yards and the late score.
It’s likely too late to save this season in Detroit, but Sunday’s win was a big step in turning the page on the Patricia era while providing a glimmer of hope for the future.
